The Committee’s Statement

The Trade Committee ultimately decided that: even though two consenting managers agreed with the terms of the trade, the trade was judged as fair, and the request to cancel came a day later – the Trade Committee would allow the trade to process unabated.

In the previous system, there was also no guarantee that a trade would be cancelled: if you could not garner enough vetoes, your trade would also process and be fulfilled. In the previous system, you had to receive support of 3 other teams to “cancel” a trade. With the Trade Committee, your only need the support of 2 other parties.

From the perspective of the Trade Committee – if we ignore/remove the request to withdraw after the trade was accepted – the trade was fair on paper. Judging anything outside of the trade is beyond the Trade Committee’s capabilities; we cannot guarantee that level of commitment consistently enough to fulfill that expectation.

As a response to the only player involved in the trade being dropped, the Commissioner requested a plan for remediation of the trade. The Trade Committee concluded to reverse a portion of the trade. In return for Rashee Rice, the R3 draft pick would be traded; the R5 draft pick would not be a part of the trade.

The Trade Committee chose to not reverse the full trade to dissuade abusing this one-off decision for future mishaps. This R5 “tax” is not a precedent for future reversals. This is a novel situation where the Trade Committee acted to the best of their abilities with the limited amount of time & information at hand.

Future incidents will continue to be handled on a case-by-case basis. If the issues manifest into a pattern of similar problems, the Trade Committee will respond in kind by advertising how they will handle this as a class of issues.
